Chinese Shar Peis - Pictures - Description
Shar-Peis originated in China about 2000 years ago. It is an ancient breed, whose past is rather complicated and tragic. The Shar-Pei is an outstanding breed, as its appearance and temperament are almost incomparable with any other dog breed.

The Shar-Pei is a moderate sturdy dog, whose head seems a bit large for the body. The Shar-Pei carries its wrinkled head proudly and assertively. The wrinkles cover the face, withers and the whole body of a puppy. When the dog grows older, the wrinkles on the body disappear. Only the head and neck stay wrinkled. However, those skin folds can be more obvious in some adult dogs than in others.
The small eyes are almond-shaped and set so deep that it limits the Shar-Pei's vision. The small ears are of a triangular form. The nose is either black or the same color as the coat. The Shar-Pei's tongue is black.
The Shar-Pei stands 18-20 inches at the withers. The weight ranges from 45 to 60 pounds. Life expectancy of the breed is approximately 12 years. Though, one Shar-Pei is known to have lived up to 18 years old.
Chinese Shar Peis - Pictures - Personality
The Shar-Pei has a peculiar personality. The Shar-Pei breed admirers say "so many Shar-Peis, so many characters." One Shar-Pei may be outgoing and cheerful, while another will tend to be calm and standoffish. According to a common point of view, the Shar-Pei is independent and dignified. It keeps cautious and aloof with strangers and may even seem indifferent or apathetic. However, the Shar-Pei is often referred to as a devoted companion and an affectionate friend to its family members.
Chinese Shar Peis - Pictures - Coat Colors
According to the standard, the Shar-Pei must come only in solid colors. The Shar-Pei's coat colors are very beautiful indeed. They are black, cream, beige, brown, tan, blue, etc. The Shar-Pei means "sandy skin." Thus, the straight off-standing coat gave Shar-Peis their name.
