Chinese Shar Peis - Pictures - History in China
Shar-Peis originated in China, in the village of Tai-Li, the Chinese province of Kwangtun. The origin of the Shar-Pei brings us back to 200 AD. As archeological excavations show, the Shar-Pei's ancestors were highly appreciated. They served as tomb dogs. Actually, Shar-Peis were working dogs in early China and were mostly used as guardians in the houses of Chinese farmers.
The Shar-Pei breed could have been destroyed in 1940s. The rulers of the Communist regime in China imposed a luxury tax on all pets. Such means led to the situation in which only enthusiasts from other countries were able to save the breed. Some Shar-Peis were imported to the United States, Australia, New Zealand and with the arrival of new litters hope for the future of the breed grew stronger. The Shar-Pei is still thought of as an exceptional breed, although it is not a rare breed any more.
In China the Shar-Pei is usually shown in three varieties: pet type Shar-Peis, medium type and traditional type. The types are differentiated by the lips' form in Shar-Peis. The traditional type has thinner lips. Chinese Shar Peis - Pictures - Famous Representatives of the Breed
The first Shar-Pei registered in the United States was bred in Hong-Kong in Down Homes Kennel in 1973. The first show quality Shar-Pei was Shir Du Bang, the champion of the American National Shar-Pei Club.
ZL's Blue Genes is the name of the Shar-Pei born in 1985 and known as the first genuinely blue Shar-Pei. The blue coat color is considered one of the most beautiful in Shar-Peis.
